It’s commonplace to believe that happiness lies within the next promotion, the dream marriage or that fancy new sports car. Instinctively, we know it’s not…. But here we are, stuck in the rat race, caught in the trap of striving towards this because nobody has taught us any different.

Until the science of Positive Psychology came in.

Meet our Founder, Meg

Hiya. I’m Meg. And I’m currently living my happiest life. 

But it wasn’t always like that. 

Prior to following my dream and building a life around what matters most to me, I lived like most of us do. Going to work, building a career, constantly driving towards the next goal in hope that one of the things I achieved was going to bring me sheer elation. Spoiler alert, none of them ever did.  

Sure, my life looked great on the outside. I was driven. I made shit happen. I managed my own department at 22. Joined my first Board at 24. Completed 2 masters degrees whilst working full time in an Executive role. Earned my first 6 figure salary at 27. I stood on my own two feet, and I had the nice car and fancy heels just to show the world how well I was doing. 

But was it making me happy?

Well, I wasn’t unhappy. That’s the same thing, right?

One night driving home from work I sat at a red light and realised that I’d been thinking about my life wrong. That not being unhappy is very different to really living your life. And at that moment I decided to change how I was living my life.

I went home that night and wrote happiness in the middle of a piece of paper and tried to work out what that word meant to me. I declared the following year, ‘the year of Meg’ and completely changed the way I was living my life. I prioritised experience over material things, learning over achievement and freedom over financial income. And I still got shit done…. It all just felt a little… easier?

So why am I here?

At some point during the Year of Meg I discovered positive psychology (the science of wellbeing) and went back to school to become a positive psychologist. Since I’ve started working with our clients, I’ve learned that so many people are stuck in this rut thinking goal attainment is their key to happiness. Nope. It’s not. 

So few of us proactively look after our mental health and trade in our happiness for 10 hour days, scrolling through social media and generally shit that does nothing for the world in the pursuit of achievement. So, I left the world of chasing a salary, striving for a bigger house or a better car to bring a community together to look at what positive psychology has to offer. Its now my mission to help as many people as I can to not fall into the same trap and hopefully do my bit to make the world a better place.

Truth is, the science is telling us lots of useful stuff about how to live fulfilling lives, but lots of it is sat in the heads of the boffins in the research labs. I created happybyme to bring you this science, so you don’t have to do the heavy lifting. In all of our solutions we cut through the crap and bring you the abridged version. We make it easy to understand but more importantly, easy to apply.

Because that’s my favourite thing about happiness. It’s by you. For you.
